What We Are

Mission: To foster and assist local, independent journalism in New York’s Hudson Valley. Through direct financial support and by providing needed services beyond the capabilities of individual members, HVNA’s mission is to strengthen existing area news organizations, and provide a boost for new newsrooms that broaden the local news ecosystem.

Who We Serve: HVNA serves journalists, publishers and locally-owned news organizations based in the Hudson Valley whose primary coverage are the communities of the region. Locally owned and managed non-profit and for-profit news organizations, and freelancers of member and non-member news organizations can all join.

How We Help: HVNA assists local news organizations in two ways: by providing direct financial support to newsrooms that participate in HNVC news initiatives, and by providing services to publishers to enhance their operations.

WHY?

Local news is in crisis. Many communities in the Hudson Valley have lost their news coverage, and the publishers that remain in the Valley are under severe strain. These vital community resources – local newspapers, reporters, editors, photographers, columnists - are in danger of disappearing forever.

WHAT?

The Hudson Valley News Alliance (HVNA) is a concerted, collective effort to keep local news reporting healthy and growing in the Hudson Valley. By fostering collaboration and leveraging philanthropy, the HVNA will strengthen independent newsrooms and publications with programs and initiatives no single publisher could feasibly do on their own.

HOW?

Local newsrooms are now essentially public services, yet most are still organized as for-profit businesses. This structure prevents them from accessing many sources of philanthropic and foundational support. HVNA was conceived to operate as a bridge between non-profit givers and the dozens of local, for-profit newsrooms in the area.
